We have discovered a bug in Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS-5.
Messages sent from iOS-4 Verizon Wireless iPhones are, of course, sent as text messages. However, when sending a message from a VZW iOS-5 iPhone to a VZW iOS-4 device (4.2.10 in our test), the application mistakenly sends as an iMessage, which appears to send, but in reality is lost. If iMessage is deactivated within the “Settings” menu, the message is sent as a text message and the system works appropriately.
The same situation was tested on AT&T iPhones and did not recur; this flaw seems to be exclusive to Verizon Wireless phones.
The one major outstanding question: Are the iOS5-to-iOS4 iMessages being delivered “somewhere”, leaving a major security hole, or just disappearing into the ether ?
